
Before the Lunar New Year, it is common to see many new red lanterns hanging in some temples. It has names of believers written on them. Red lanterns are being hang up to represent “lighting up a brightness lamp”.
“Lighting up a brightness Lamp” is a folk custom and it means to pray for blessing. It is also known as peace lights, eternal lights or endless lights. It represents the lights will not go off, breaking the darkness and illuminating the future.
According to folk customs, some believers who are at the temple to pray “Tai Sui Ye”, will also light up a brightness lamp in way of praying “Tai Sui Ye” to seek blessing. There are also believers who specially go to the temple to light a brightness lamp for themselves and their families, hoping to seek blessing for themselves and their families in the new year.

民间习俗里,如遇到本命年,就是所谓的犯太岁,一般信徒会到庙宇拜太岁或点光明灯。也有一般的信徒特意到庙宇为自己和家人点一盏光明灯,让光明灯保佑自己和家人在新的一年里事事顺利,平平安安。
