The Netherworld Travel Pass, also known as the “Spirit Road Pass”, is a symbolic “document” used in traditional funerals and Taoist rituals. Its main purpose is to serve as a permit for the deceased’s soul to travel smoothly between the living world (Yang realm) and the netherworld (Yin realm).
The pass is usually made of paper and includes the following information:
- Name of the deceased
- Place of origin
- Birth date and time (in traditional Chinese format)
- Date of death
- Validity period: typically one day
Uses:
- Funeral Rituals
Commonly used in Cantonese funerals. During the chanting of scriptures to open the spirit road, the Taoist priest places the travel pass on the deceased’s body or memorial tablet. This symbolizes that the soul has been issued a permit to pass through the realms. - Other Taoist Ceremonies
It is also applicable in rituals such as inviting or sending off ancestors and spirits, among other similar ceremonies.
